OVERVIEW
The Usambara Mountains, part of the ancient Eastern Arc chain, boast a geological history of at least 100 million years. Spanning Southeast Kenya to Southwest Tanzania, these mountains offer unparalleled biodiversity, creating a haven for unique flora and fauna.
ITENARY
Day 1: Lushoto to Magamba Village Begin your journey by driving from Lushoto to Magamba village, where you’ll embark on a trek through Magamba rainforest. This lush environment is home to black and white Columbus monkeys, diverse flowers, and a myriad of bird species. Navigate up and down hills, arriving at Lukozi village for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Lukozi to Rangwi After breakfast, walk along valleys and sloping hillsides of the inner Usambara Mountains. Pass by vegetable farms adorned with eucalyptus and banana trees. Traverse villages like Malindi, Makose, and Kagulio, eventually reaching Rangwi Catholic mission for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Rangwi to Mtae Explore traditional villages, gaining insights into the Washambaa way of life. Encounter a pottery women’s group and proceed to Mtae, a world viewpoint with breathtaking vistas of Maasai plains, Mkomazi National Park, and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro on the horizon. Enjoy the sunrise and sunset views, followed by dinner and an overnight stay at Mwivano guesthouse.
Day 4: Mtae to Mlalo Embark on a journey to Goka village and enter the forest, passing through traditional villages and meeting pottery women. Arrive at Mlalo for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Mkuzi Waterfall and Return to Lushoto Drive to Mkuzi village and hike to the Mkuzu waterfall nestled within the forest. After relishing the waterfall experience, return to Lushoto for an overnight stay.
Day 6: Kwesimu Village to Irente Farm and View Point Drive to Kwesimu village and trek to Irente Farm and the viewpoint. Marvel at the panoramic views overlooking Mazinde village and the vast Maasai plains. Stop at Irente Farm for a delightful lunch featuring homemade cheese, jam, juice, butter, brown bread, and seasonal fruit. Conclude your trek with a walk or drive back to Lushoto.
