7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via Rongai Route with Manyara Travel Club
Embark on an unforgettable adventure with Manyara Travel Club as we guide you to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route. This remarkable 7-day trek offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a less-traveled path to Africa’s highest peak. The Rongai Route, approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern side, is known for its gradual ascent, making it one of the easier and more scenic trails to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). If you seek an incredible trekking experience with fewer crowds, mesmerizing scenery, and a higher chance of success, this route is the perfect choice.
Why Choose the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is one of the few trails that approach Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Unlike the more popular Marangu and Machame routes, Rongai offers a sense of solitude and wilderness, as fewer trekkers opt for this path. The route is also known for its dry climate, making it an excellent choice during the rainy seasons. With gradual slopes and excellent acclimatization opportunities, the Rongai Route offers a high summit success rate while treating climbers to stunning landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts.
7-Day Rongai Route Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Your journey begins upon arrival in Moshi, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. Manyara Travel Club will arrange your transfer to a comfortable hotel, where you will meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing. Here, we will go over the itinerary, check equipment, and ensure you are fully prepared for the trek. Spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the beautiful town of Moshi before the adventure begins.
Day 2: Moshi to Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Trek to Simba Camp (2,650m)
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Distance: 8km
- Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, we drive to Rongai Gate, where the adventure officially begins. The trail starts with a gentle hike through lush montane forests, home to blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and various bird species. As we ascend, the vegetation becomes thinner, giving way to rolling hills and vast moorlands. The day ends at Simba Camp, where we enjoy a hearty dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Simba Camp (2,650m) to Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Distance: 6km
- Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek offers a steady ascent with incredible views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest summit. We pass through heather and moorland zones, where unique high-altitude plants thrive. After a few hours of trekking, we arrive at Second Cave Camp, a scenic resting place with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. This day allows for gradual acclimatization, ensuring better chances of reaching the summit.
Day 4: Second Cave (3,450m) to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m)
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Distance: 5km
- Habitat: Moorland
Our trek continues towards Kikelelwa Camp, with an increasingly rugged landscape. The terrain becomes rockier as we ascend, but the views remain breathtaking. This campsite is located near a small water stream and offers a peaceful resting place with incredible vistas of Mawenzi Peak. After arrival, trekkers have time to rest and acclimatize before the following day’s adventure.
Day 5: Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Distance: 4km
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek is short but steep, leading us to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. This high-altitude zone offers one of the most stunning landscapes on the route, with towering cliffs and pristine alpine lakes. The afternoon is dedicated to acclimatization, as we take short hikes to higher altitudes before returning to camp.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Distance: 9km
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
This crucial day takes us across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, a vast desert-like plateau with surreal volcanic landscapes. The air becomes thinner, and the temperatures drop as we reach Kibo Hut, our base camp before the summit push. After an early dinner, trekkers rest in preparation for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 7: Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (Summit & Descent)
- Distance: 22km (Total)
- Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland
Summit day begins around midnight with a challenging trek to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. The climb is steep and demanding, but the reward is incredible. From Gilman’s Point, we continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Witness the breathtaking sunrise over glaciers and volcanic landscapes, celebrating your incredible achievement.
After capturing memories at the summit, we descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. This long day concludes with well-deserved rest and celebration.
Day 8: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m) – Return to Moshi
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Distance: 20km

Our final trek takes us through lush rainforests, where we may spot colobus monkeys and exotic birds. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, we receive our summit certificates before returning to Moshi for a relaxing evening at the hotel.
